I like to think of Metformin as the Ugh Drug, because when I know it’s that time to take it, I think ugh and I imagine this…
I first learned I needed Metformin in January. I was having problems losing weight, and since thyroid disorder runs in my family, tests were ran. Thyroid issues were ruled out, however, the tests showed I was insulin resistant. This explained a lot of things, I also think I may have PCOS because of how my female cycles are, sometimes I have them sometimes I don’t. When I have them they last for weeks.
The doctor started me out with 500mg XR once a week at bedtime. I did as suggested took it with food. I would wake up the following morning and be running back and forth to the bathroom for several hours… Once I upped my dose to 1000mg XR, the stomach pains got worse and I was in the bathroom for a good 6 hours after waking. If I had plans the following day I had to skip the meds.
Life for me SUCKED!
I told my doctor what was going on she suggested I do 500 in the morning and 500 in the evening, this still changed nothing for me. I stopped taking the pill completely. However, I decided if I have PCOS I want the problem fixed and if I don’t take the meds chances are I will have diabetes in the future.
So I changed how I take them completely, I decided to try taking them in the morning with breakfast. I have discovered by doing this, I have a few cramps in the morning, followed by a bathroom run, then all is fine the rest of the day. In order for me to get to this point I did take a total of 6 imodium ad pills… two in the morning for three days.
I have the imodium ad pills on hand in case the big issues come up again, but for now I will take my 1000mg XR Metformin pills in the morning with breakfast.
I am hoping not only will the pills help me with my weight loss, but also help me conceive!
Do you take Metformin? How long were you on them before the stomach problems went away?
