If you have oily skin into adulthood then chances are that it’s both hereditary and environmental. Our hormones are what play the biggest role in our skin’s oil production.  Poor diet and exercise is one thing that can contribute to this. But as stated before it can simply be in your genes. While you cant change your DNA you can take some steps to figure out exactly how to get rid of your oily skin.

Your skin requires water to live and thrive. One reason skin will produce excess oil is because of dehydration. If your skin doesn’t have the water it needs it will respond by producing oil to keep it from drying out. Stay hydrated with plenty of water. If you have to have sugary/sweetened drinks try to stick with iced tea or sports drinks as these still contain mostly water. Stay away from sodas and other heavily processed beverages. Alright you’re drinking for your skin, but what next?

Just staying hydrated will not stop oil production all together but will keep excess production at a minimum. Since the root cause of oily skin is hormones it will require some examination. How to get rid of oily skin is quite the adventure. Fluctuations in hormone levels will contribute greatly to oily skin. This is why it’s normal to experience teenage acne during puberty. If the oily skin remains a problem into adulthood then you may have hormonal fluctuations caused by certain foods, stress or some other environmental cause. If you can rule out these as  problem then it all comes back to genetics.

If your body produces more Androgens than normal this will most definitely be the root cause of your oily skin problems. Androgens are the stronger types of testosterone present in both males and females. Androgens contribute to body hair, sebum (oil) production and a multitude of other things. So if you’ve taken other steps to reduce oily skin naturally and you’re still having issues this is most likely your problem.

Ok I have excess hormones causing my oily skin, what now? There are in fact many ways to naturally regulate and reverse a genetic hormone imbalance. There are studies that show both turmeric and saw palmetto help to reduce androgens such as DHT in the body. Taking supplements may help if you’d like to try the all natural approach. For those who may not be as experimental minded as others you can always visit your physician and have your hormone levels tested. The best way to get rid of oily skin is to find the root cause and address it. Good luck.
