Crochet Monster High Hat Pattern

I have come to learn how to crochet, and I have to say I am loving it! I started out slow, first with some dish scrubbies and wash clothes. Now I am working on making hats. I know I still need lots of practice so I have started to make the family some hats. What better way to practice then making hats for the family.

My first attempt was a fail. Made one for my husband, well I am only just learning how to read patterns, and let’s just say every time I went around the hat I managed to add another stitch. I have now completed four hats, the last three have been pretty awesome, two of which were monster high hats, the first one isn’t as good as the second…

First attempt…

Second attempt…

crochet monster high hat

Before I started I looked for a pattern. The only thing I could find was people selling them, so I decided to just pretend I knew what I was doing. I used the pattern at Happy in Red as a guide. However, the first time using this pattern it was a bust, so I made some changes to it, so it worked for me…

What you need:

Worst weight yarn in 100% Acrylic (white, black, and pink) I didn’t have pink, but the bow on the monster high skull is pink.

Hook H and I

Yarn needle

Chain 3 and join with a slip stitch to make a circle.

Round 1. Chain 2 and crochet 10 double crochets into the ring… DON’T count the starter as one… you should have a total or 11 when you get to the end. Connect the ring with a slip stitch.

Round 2. Chain 2, 1 double crochet into the same stitch, then continue with 2 double crochets in each stitch of the last round, join to make a circle with a slip stich.

Round 3. Chain 2, 1 double crochet in the same stitch, 2 double crochet in the next stitch, *1 double crochet in the next stitch, 2 double crochet in the following stitch*, ** till the end of the round, join with a slip stitch. Make sure you are keeping track and alternating… if you skip one or do one to many you will end up with a smaller/bigger hat.

Round 4. Chain 2, 1 double crochet in the same stitch, 1 double crochet in the next, 2 double crochets in the following stitch, *1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochet in the 3rd stitch*, ** till the end of the round, join with slip stitch.

Round 5. Chain 2, 1 double crochet in the same stitch, 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, 2 double crochet in the next, *1 in the next 3 stitches, 2 double crochets in the 4th*, ** untill the end of the round, join with a slip stitch.

Round 6. Chain 2, 1 double crochet in same stitch, 1 double crochet in the next 3 stitches, 2 double crochets in the next stitch, *1 double crochet in the following 4 stitches, 2 double crochets in the 5th stitch*, ** untill the end of the round, join with a slip stitch.

If the hat needs to be larger, then increase by adding one single so round 7 would be… 5 singles, then the 6th a double crochet. The above will make a hat for a child/teen. My daughter is 11 and it fits her perfect.

If you don’t need to increase continue to round 7 as normal..

Round 7. Chain 2 and crochet 1 double crochet in every stitch. Join the circle with a slip stitch. Repeat this until you get the desired length, I went until row 16 then finish off with one last row with a half double stitch.

Don’t confuse the slip stitch with the single crochet, that’s where I went wrong with my first attempt to make my husband a hat following the directions from Happy in Red.

Bow: Monster High bow is pink but you can use what ever one you would like…

I used the bow pattern from Clare’s Addicted to Yarn. She has a nice video tutorial that will show you how it’s done. Make sure to subscribe to her channel she has some awesome work. I used Hook I for the bow, eyes, and nose.

Now the eyes… As you can tell from my first attempt at the eyes it was a fail. I Googled in an attempt to find what I was looking for with no luck, so I grabbed a picture of the Monster High Skull and guessed…

Using black and hook I…

Chain 7 Round 1 – 4. Skip first chain and half double crochet 6 then rotate and do again.

You will need two of these. I left the tails and used the tails to place on the hat, and sew on. The remaining was also used for the eyelashes, then I tied it off and weaved into the inside of the hat.

My nose needs some work, I just did a three chain, then did three half double crochets. Sewed it on and attempted to shape it. Good luck!
